A Tale of Two Canyons
I felt the irresistible urge to return to Sedona today (January 6), so off the KIA and I went, to Grasshopper Point. I headed first down Allens Bend Trail, to the edge of Oak Creek.
I found several rock overhangs along the way to the Casner Canyon Trail, which requires crossing Oak Creek. That was not advisable today, with the creek running full tilt.

As my dinner locale, La Cucina Rustica did not open until 5 P.M., I had time to savour Wilson Canyon, about 1 1/2 miles west of Grasshopper. This canyon heads up to the foot of a mountain, also named for Charles Wilson, whose local claim to fame is that he took on a grizzly bear in the area, and lost.
I had a bit more company on this trail. In fact, the couple I met while on the way out of Casner Canyon showed up in Wilson, as I was hiking out. I hope they hurried; the sun was going down. It was good they were there, though. A young lady was hiking solo, up to the rim, as I was headed down.
Here are some scenes from that somewhat icier path.
After “Trail’s End”, I scrambled up to the top of the canyon rim, and saw a spectacular panorama:

The silhouette below is of a horse-faced rock, which seems to be pointing towards the red rocks to the south.
After Wilson Canyon, with my craving for fine Italian cuisine hitting a high level, I enjoyed cauliflower & cheddar soup, penne con salcicce and bocca negra con gelato.
(Salcicce is sausage and bocca negra is flourless chocolate cake.) All of Chefs Lisa Dahl and Andrea Di Luca’s creations are heavenly. I know this especially from owning a copy of Lisa’s cookbook.

Great photos. Looks very dry except for the stream.
look like a good hike, nice pic
Wow ... awesome! The last pic is brilliant. Do u use special camera for this particular journey?
My favorite picture is of the second group of pictures the 5th one down of the water. It reminds me of a creek I used to play in when I was a kid. (: These are amazing and such a great way to spend a day.
@TheSutraDude - It is not soggy, certainly. The second canyon's creek was frozen over.
@James2012 - Thanks, James. Happy New Year!
@SherryAngeLMysteriez - No, I have just my Samsung PL 120 digital.
@Wynter_Snowe_Gem - I have always loved being out in nature. As a child, I wandered all over our town, seeking the peaceful places.
@RighteousBruin - Where my grandparents lived, the Whitetail Deer would just come up in the front yard and eat from our Apple Tree. They also had that creek in front that I was talking about. It was serene and peaceful. I miss it.
@Wynter_Snowe_Gem - That is neat. I have seen quite a few deer and elk, over the past eight months, both here in AZ and along the Pacific Coast, in northern California, Oregon and Washington. Three mule deer were along the road yesterday, in Sedona.
Sedona is a beautiful area. I think it's my favorite part of Arizona that you've shared with us.
RIP Mr. Wilson - thanks for the hike, their always great!
@songoftheheart - It is certainly one of my favourites.
@mlbncsga - It's always my pleasure to share these sights.
Wonderful pics..felt like I was there!
Geological practices are weird, they're fascinating to learn about but in practice are the most drawn out, boring thing in the world.
such great places to hike. you're in the right part of the country.
I really like the last pic!
Sounds like Mr. Wilson was a victim of the Darwin Principle. Nice pics.
Such beautiful pictures! sorry for my late reply! I hope you had a great New Years eve, and that the new year have been beautiful so far. Much love<3

@hesacontradiction - @plantinthewindow - @crankycaregiver - They never fail to give me a physical and spiritual boost.
@agnophilo - True that rocks can't talk, and walking gets tiresome if you let it. For me, it's the sense of unity that I feel, which gets me out in the back country, time and again. It's not for everyone, and that's all good.
@whyzat - Stupid was as stupid did.
@Be_happy_Be_you - My New Year has gone well so far- I have spent much time with beloved children in my area and have continued to live a life of focused energy.
